Holiday Decorations

Lori Krause • December 7, 2018

I LOVE this time of year! Winter is my favorite season and the holidays make it even more special for me. I especially like decorating for Christmas. No color coordination here and there is no theme. Well, my family may argue that I do have a ‘Santa’ theme. But my decorations and tree are full of items that tell our story – my story. Like the Santa painted on canvas that hangs near the front door.

I was a nurse working in a lung specialist’s office in the mid 90’s. A woman came in one day selling items because she needed money to pay for the care of a child with special needs. We very easily could have asked her to leave since the office and the building had a no solicitation policy, but her artwork was beautiful. Not only did she have Santa’s painted on canvas, but she also had angels and reindeer. I think I bought one of each, but the Santa is hung every year.

Speaking of Santa, I have a few that actually stay out year round! This is mostly because they are just too big, heavy, or awkward to get in and out of storage. I’ve also found some cool, unique ones while we were traveling that I just couldn’t pass up, but had to have them shipped home because we were on vacation and I couldn’t fit them in a suitcase. One of my absolute favorites is my Santa Bear - carved and painted by my dad.

Then there is the beaded Christmas tree and accessories that I made. I strung every single bead on the tree and twisted it to make the branches and it even lights up! I made it when my husband and I were dating so it’s over 30 years old.

My actual tree is full of homemade items the kids made over the years and things that may or may not be true ‘ornaments’ but remind of us of places we’ve been and things we’ve done as a family.
